Why Don't New Year's Resolutions Work?

Posted by Stephen Daniels Posted Date:01/17/2014 4:57 AM

Every single year it happens.  Millions of people set New Year's resolutions only to give up just a few weeks later.  We have such good intentions...  We say to ourselves, "This year is going to be my year!"  We get everything ready that we need to be successful and we keep our self pumped up about being successful.  We work so hard at it...then...nothing!

Because we didn't get the results that we were looking for in 24 hours, we begin to view it as an inconvenience to our life.  We give up and move toward something else and tell ourselves that we'll do it next month...then the next month...etc.!  The next thing you know...you're making a New Year's Resolution for the next year just to repeat the cycle.  Don't get me wrong, there is a small percentage of people that do it right and accomplish their resolutions every year...but what are they doing differently?

The reason resolutions don't work is because we don't set ourselves up for success!!

Let me ask you a very serious question.  Do you want 2014 to be your year?  Call it a hunch...I'm betting that your answer is yes.  Since that's the case, are you willing to try something a little different?  I feel I'm on a roll here but...  I bet the answer is yes again.  If this is true...good...keep reading!

You may or may not agree with me, but the truth is, we live in a predominantly negative and limited thinking society.  The path of least resistance is for us to think like the majority.  We like to fit in, right?  Earl Nightingale said, "You are exactly where you want to be, whether you want to admit it or not!"

Have you ever felt like you can do better than what you are currently doing?  Of course you have, you're human.  How many of us are ignoring that urge to excel?  The stat is about 95%...Crazy isn't it?  19 out of 20 people settle for being dissatisfied with what they are currently doing.  If I do the math on that, you are probably one of those people.

Earl Nightingale also said, "The opposite of courage is not cowardice, it's conformity."  If you really think about what he's saying, you know it's completely true.  Everyone talks about how being unique and special and different is so important...but then we all just end up doing what everyone else does...We settle.  Aren't we following the wrong percentage of people?

Do you want to know the secret to making 2014 the best year of your life?  Okay hear it is...  Decide what you want and write it down.
I know this sounds way over simplified, but let me explain.  If you want to accomplish more, you have to decide what "more" is.  Once you know exactly what more is, you begin to think about it and your desire and passion grows toward achieving it.  If you're not sure what you really want...of course you're not going to achieve anything.

It reminds me of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland when he said, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there."

If you're really serious about making 2014 the best ever...it's time to get serious and start deciding what the best ever will be.  You can't get that from a book or a workshop...you have to look deep inside yourself and make the decision only for you.

Paul J Meyer says, "Stop procrastinating!  Why live a life with undeveloped talent?"

Let me make a huge promise to you...  If you are truly honest with yourself about what you want and you write it out in a plan of how to get there, 2014 will be the best year of your life.  Don't believe me...I challenge you to prove me wrong.  What's the worst that can happen?

I wish you nothing but success this year and if you believe you will be successful and take action, that is what you will receive.  It's completely up to you!

LEADERSHIP 3-2-1 – PERSONAL LEADERSHIP

1. Success requires action. Before you can have, you must do. Before you can do, you must become. Write down five things you want to accomplish tomorrow. Then, each day for an additional five days, make up such a list. This is your first action step in forming the habit and attitudes of goal setting and becoming.
